Cam exited the elevator, juggling several bogs of groceries and a tray of various coffee absently as he tried to reach for his keys and single out the one that belonged to the lock to the apartment door that he was reaching. Looped around his wrist was the leash to his collie's collar, Charlie, who obediently followed him happily, just glad to be able to get out of the fairly small apartment. It was rare that Cam got out in the morning, yes he did run and take Charlie with him, but that was mostly around sunset, not early in the morning, when he's busy getting ready for work. However, he was willing to make an exception for this time.
It was only about eight in the morning, he woke up at seven and spent the hour running around town on some errands and paperwork he had to mail in. He then stopped by the house, and took his dog for a walk, followed by a trip to the groceries store to buy some food. Besides the fruits, bread, and other usual things he brought, he brought a waffle mix, Gatorade, monster, Jack Daniels, and some coke. He was a terrible cook, and depended on either some of his friends, take out, or Betty Crocker for dinner. Mostly, his friends would be over, and they would order take-out anyways, so rarely did he worry about it.
Why was he up so early and running around when usually he's not even home half the day? Simple, a friend promise that she would come over. A friend that he would gladly clear his schedule for if she wanted to see him. Corrine was arriving, he wasn't sure for how long, and if she had eaten, so last night he stayed up cleaning up the house and throwing out things that he didn't need, and this morning he went shopping for her so that she could have someone to eat. She recently lost someone to close to her, and he felt that she carried too much of a burden at the moment, and he wouldn't mind helping her and taking the reigns when she needed it. He was only a phone call away. And even though he couldn't cook for his life, he figured that eggs, toast or waffles isn't out of his reach. He couldn't guarantee anything though.
Pushing opening the door with his foot, he unhooked Charlie leash and dumped the bags on the counter, merely plucking everything from the bag and then throwing it into the fridge besides the bananas and the waffle mix into the cabinets. He tied up the plastic bags and deposited them in a box under the sink. He set the tray near the sink, since he didn't know her preference, so he picked whatever he wanted, and hoped that it was the right one. He leaned against the counter, crossing his arms for a moment as he looked around the apartment. Overall, it was filled with matched furniture, mostly a warm brown color, a few throw pillows were haphazardly thrown on the couch, a fancy lamp rested on the side table, and one or two pictures hang off the wall; but mostly they only decoration he had was the pictures on the mantle of the fireplace. He didn't have a TV, believing that not only did he not have time for it, he swore that the more he watched TV, he could hear the cells in his head dying. But for his friend's sake, he had a laptop, trying to be conservative, he rarely used that too unless it was for work.It wasn't the most perfect place, it didn't look like it should in magazines or on the brochure that advertised the building, but it gave off a feeling of home, a place that he could go to to relax and feel comfortable. That quality couldn't be found in expensive things; he mostly brought cheap, but in good condition when it came to the things he needed. He wasn't for material things, except the stereo that was in his room.
Sighing, he turned and pulled out some eggs, if she wasn't hungry, she was going to have to forgive him, since he hadn't eaten yet.

It had been one hell of a morning for Corrine, but she was finally up and going. Colby had woken up earlier than usual, running into her bedroom around six-thirty to jump on her bed and wake her up because he wanted to play. Corrine humored her son and got up, wrestling with him on the bed and tickling him because he loved to be tickled by mommy. It still felt weird to her, waking up without someone on the other side of the bed and being the only one that Colby would run to when he woke up. For months after Josh's death, Colby had been confused. He still was, six months later, but she knew that was to be expected since he had only been a year old when Josh died. It had been so difficult to get through the funeral with a baby to take care of, which was why she was so thankful that Caleb had been there to distract Colby during the services. Her brother had been a lifesaver.
After a few minutes of playing, Corrine got up and took Colby to his nursery to change his diaper. She set out his clean clothes for the day before taking him to the kitchen for his breakfast, knowing he would get messy while eating. Putting him in his high chair, she made his breakfast before helping him use his spoon to eat it. She laughed as he made his usual mess while attempting to feed himself. But for an eighteen-month-old, he was doing pretty good by himself eating. Once he was done, she cleaned him off and took him back to his room to put his clean clothes on for the day. Since the weather was getting colder, she put his overalls and long-sleeved shirt on along with his socks and new shoes. "Look at that," she said, lifting him up from the changing table. "Mommy's handsome boy." She took him over to his toys and set him down before shutting the gate to his room so he wouldn't get out into places he shouldn't be while she got ready. Going back into her bedroom, she threw on a pair of jeans and a nicer shirt before brushing through her long locks and pulling them into a low ponytail.
When she was ready, she went back to the nursery and picked up Colby. "Alright little man, it's time to go see Cam," she said, taking him out to the car and buckling him into his car seat before putting his diaper bag on the floor. Pulling out of her driveway, she drove through the streets of Cape May until turning onto Cam's street. Cameron had been one of her closest friends since high school. She considered him closer than a lot of her girlfriends, which said something about his character. After Josh's death, he had been there for her just as much as her siblings and parents had, helping out in whatever ways he could with Colby. Colby took to him easily and enjoyed playing with him since Cam was a great guy with kids. When she parked, she got Colby out and went up to Cam's door and knocked a few times. Today was going to be a good day. She could tell.

Cam turned his head, hearing the knock on the door. He turned back to his eggs as they cooked and tossed some salt in it. 'In a minute,' he called to the door, knowing who was there. He wasn't going to be careless and just leave the stove on- he happened to like his apartment too much to risk it being burned down. Charlie, hearing the knock also, scampered to the door, whimpering as he looked at Cam, as if waiting for an excuse as to why the door isn't opened so he could smoother his visitors with love. Cameron stared back before turning off the stove and sliding the eggs into a plate, wiping his hands on his pants as he went to open the door. Lucky for him, it happened to be right next to the kitchen- so it was less for him.
Opening the door, he looked down at Colby with a smile. 'Hey big boy!' he said, reaching down to scoop him up with a grin. He tossed the little boy in the air and catching him before he turned to Corrine. 'Morning,' he said, one of those easy going smile on his face as he looked at her. He took a few steps back and opened the door further for her as Charlie proceeded to jump on her, wanting to have some fun, barking with enthusiasm. 'Charlie, down,' he ordered, setting down a now squirming boy in the mercy of the dog. Charlie was only 2 months old, he was more playful then harmful.
Turning to her, as he closed the door, he went back to the kitchen quickly. 'Have you eaten anything yet? I can make you something- but you know me- I can hardly cook,' he offered her, pulling out the bread and making toast with it. Scrambled eggs, bacon and assuages, and toast, that was all he had, he hoped it would do, she shouldn't have to work so hard lately.

As they waited, Corrine could hear Cameron's dog on the other side of the dog impatiently waiting. His dog Charlie was a sweetheart, albeit a little too friendly for her liking, but she was getting used to that. He was a good dog and Colby seemed to love him, so she was more concerned with that. When Cam opened the door and greeted Colby, she watched as he scooped her son up and tossed him up in the air, causing her son to giggle and clap his hands excitedly. "Morning," she replied back to Cam before stepping into his apartment and being greeted by his dog. She laughed and watched as Cam scolded the dog and Charlie backed off before Cam set Colby down to play with the dog. She watched as he gleefully patted the dog, watching to see if the dog would snap at him, which he thankfully didn't.
Keeping her eye on her son with the dog, she turned her attention to Cam's question about if she had eaten anything yet. "I actually haven't," she said, laughing when he said he wasn't much of a cook. She knew that for a fact, but didn't mind. Most guys didn't really know how to cook anyways, with the exception of her brother. But that was only because he had grown up with two younger sisters and their mom, who insisted everyone learn how to find for themselves for when they were adults. When she saw the eggs, sausage, bacon, and toast, she smiled. "This is just perfect," she said, going over and sitting down, keeping her eye on Colby who was sitting on the floor with Charlie. "Thanks Cam, I really appreciate this. It's been crazy with work and taking care of Colby lately. My brother helps when he can, but he's been really busy lately."

Cam looked at her with a grin. He had considered putting Charlie in a room since Corrine didn't seem to trust the little puppy around, not that he blamed her, his dog could be a little too excited sometimes- but so far, he hasn't hurt anyone yet, it was safe to say that he expected a lot of Charlie being a good boy. True to his word, Charlie only laid down next to the boy and let the child pet and pamper him as much as he wanted. Standing in the kitchen, which was right in front of the living room, he watched them carefully also as he finished up and food and cooked another serving of food. He made his own pretty quickly compared to the first one- though they both didn't look that bad- he put them both on a plate and walked directly across from the kitchen to the dining area, setting both plates down before he turned and poured some orange juice. He smiled at her and shook his head. 'No worries, I enjoy you coming over, it's nice to spend time with Colby.' he said lightly as he sat down across from her and watched his dog also. 'You can come over anytime, unannounced or not- I won't mind,' he said with another grin.
He picked up a fork and started to eat. 'So- how have you been?' he said softly, sounding a little more serious. He hoped she was doing okay- he knew that if he lost someone that close due to war, he wouldn't be happy either. It would have been good for him to have someone by his side to help him out- and that was what he was trying to be to her. 'Things are good, hopefully?' he asked..
